Getting Started

Golf is a great game: sometimes rewarding, often frustrating but highly addictive. Getting started is actually not so difficult, and Cambridge Golf club is here to help get you started on the right course.

 I want to play and I want to play now!!

We often get the chance to go out and play golf with friends. Borrow or share a set of clubs and hack our way around a golf course. Great. Not only is it hard on your confidence, it is also hard on the course. As hard as it will be to contain yourself, at least get some basic training or you'll end up with a lot of frustration and give up because it is "too hard".

The best way to get started is with an introductory lesson from Cambridge Golf Club's resident Pro, Rory Moor. However,if you want to give it a go by yourself first, come out to our Driving Range. Purchase a bucket of balls (we can lend you a club) and have a hit. Preferably bring a friend who has played golf to give you a hand. The best club to start with is something like a 7 iron. It might feel great trying to smash a ball with a driver but you will not get a lot of consistency.

You should get lessons!
You may have plenty of mates at the range who will teach you the 'innermost secrets' of golf. Fact is that most of them have started playing not long before you.

Golf Professionals are the only people qualified to teach you how to play the game. Lessons from a Pro will cost money but will be the best investment you'll ever make. Taking advice from friends and family will likely result in faults that will take a long time to correct later.

An introductory lesson will give you the three fundamentals:

Grip;

Stance; and,

Posture

With a basics correct you can then come out to the Driving Range and practice correctly.

Equipment

The biggest mistake by people wanting to start in golf is to rush out and buy a brand new set of shiny and expensive golf clubs. While they are nice to look at you should keep in mind that today’s golf equipment comes in great varieties to cater for different golfing types and abilities.

While you are learning the basics the best option may be to purchase two or three clubs to practice with. There are plenty of second hand golf clubs for sale on TradeMe but with the recent progress in the technology of golf club manufacture seek out the more modern one. If in doubt ask at the Pro Shop.

The Pro Shop often has second hand clubs for sale, or if your game has progressed to the stage that you would like  some new clubs there is a full range available to match your ability and budget. Make sure you try before you buy.
